YJ 60's #3

Up

With the front springs mounted, the high steer arms were installed and the 5/8"rod end sway bar end links were built. The front spring plated were also built out of 3/8" plate, like the rear. Initially rear shackles from a XJ were used, but later replaced with longer ones from a GM pick-up.

For the steering, we selected DOM 1 1/4"o.d. tube with 1/4"wall.

The 3/4-18 grade 8 nuts were pressed into the tube 2.5" apart, after being machined to have a .003" interference fit.

The tube was drilled and the inner nuts were rose welded in place, while the outer nuts received a circular bead around the edge

This shows the tube with the 3/4"-18 stud ready for the rod end.

3/4"-3/4" Stainless rod ends were used on both the tie rod and drag link.

The mocked up assy. now ready to measure for shocks

We fired up the bender once more and created what you see here. The shocks travel through the fender well sheet-metal, to the new tube that is attached at the front bumper and to the firewall. This will serve as a perfect attachment point for the future cage. The 1"o.d. cross member is removable, and gives the two upper shock mount tubes more rigidity.

Here is a finished shot showing how the tubes pass through the hood and down to the front rock guards. You can also see the rock sliders for the rocker panels that were built out of 3"X 4"X 3/8" angle.
