Jody Herstines YJ Jody Herstine's 88 Wrangler had been previously outfitted with a Ford 9" rear axle at Brutal Off-Road a few years ago. But since the axle swap, Jody has had Brutal install a 92 Chevrolet TPI 350 along with a 700R4 overdrive. Not wanting to play "Weakest Link", Jody decided to step up to the plate and have us build and install twin Dana 60's. Here is the first section of a two-part series: First, the front axle was pirated from an 85 F-350. It's a Reverse rotation (high pinion) D60 with manual hubs, 35 spline inners and 30 spline outers. It was totally disassembled and checked for straightness, and bearing journal damage
For reference of the massive size of the 60 axle u-joint, that's a 350 Chevy connecting rod!
The spindles were glass-beaded, then the bearing race surfaces were polished
After the prep, the new outer shaft support bearings were installed and seal kits made ready.
Next the calipers were disassembled, glass-beaded and inspected. New aluminum (steel were not available) pistons and seal kits were aquired, along with new bleeder screws.
New disc pads and anti-rattle springs were also used
Ready for installation.
